Robots and Security Services

Fari and Security Services. What are the main security services provided by Robotics? To what extent can Fari secure the life of the elderly?

Robotics and General Security

Advances in modern robotics have allowed society to unlock  the full potential of true robotic assistance. Thus, security robots can play larger roles in society than they ever had before. For example, to secure:

  • Critical infrastructures
  • Sites which are difficult to access
  • Large perimeters
  • Outdoor spaces that require continuous protection

But how does Robotics offers the greatest potential for increasing the value of security services? The answer is in its potential to increase the security center’s capabilities to a much higher level that human help cannot.

  1. Ensure a presence on the ground

Armed with advanced video analytics and pan-rooftop capabilities, robots provide security managers with the ability to provide a cost-effective, value-based presence on the ground. One can even use the robot to provide ground surveillance in some large areas where it is out of the question, for reasons of budgetary constraints, to deploy human guards patrolling the perimeter 24/7.

  1. Maximize human capital

By relieving them of monotonous and repetitive chores, robotics makes it possible to employ humans in more important tasks. For example, in a security operations center where they will evaluate the data transmitted by the sensors to better curb the possible threats. It is precisely in this capacity to free human agents in order to attribute them to strategic activities that the real  value of robotics in security systems shines through.

  1. Reduce risks for human guards

Many security tasks represent significant risks for workers; risks that robots can greatly mitigate or even eliminate altogether. Thus, exciting new advances show that highly intelligent robotic assistants could replace human patrols in toxic or nuclear waste storage facilities.

Fari and her key Security Services

This being the case, we’ve designed Fari to mimic many of the security features that other security robots have, in order to make sure every elder can feel safe with Fari around. Our fantastic companion for your golden years as all the capabilities to keep you and your space completely safe. Some of Fari’s incredible technologies include:

  • Alerting you whenever a window remained open; lights that have been left on; or when a movement is inside the house.
  • Connecting to every security device you have at home, giving you complete control.
  • Her facial and sound recognition system allows her to gradually learn from the environment so as to better adapt and respond to it. For example, if your son or daughter has a habit of coming late at night, and this behavior is in complete contradiction with that of other family members, Fari will recognize his/her face and footsteps and will know that he/she is not an intruder, even in the middle of the night.
  • If a threat is detected inside the house, Fari warns the thief that he is being filmed via a voice message, anduses high pitched alarms and turning on all lights in order to scare off the intruder while alerting the residents and neighbors. She can also resort to high frequency flashes of intense light in order to blind an attacker.

With these features being part of every Fari robotic assistant, you can be sure to have a companion who is friendly, caring, and sophisticated, while at the same time taking the comfort in knowing that Fari will also keep you and your loved ones safe.

Play memory games with Fari

“Play Memory Games with Fari.” In this article you will find some of the games Fari offers you in an attempt to boost your memory.

Memory is an essential aspect of our daily life. We use our memory as constantly as we do our legs. And much like a muscle, our memory can be trained using scientifically validated memory games and serious brain exercises. And just like having an atrophied muscle, it can be crippling to live with an attention deficit disorder or other conditions like Alzheimer’s  which can disrupt the normal workings of or memory.

Memory games, therefore, are designed to help you assess and train your memory, brain, and other cognitive abilities. This is why Fari can help the elderly to train their memory through various games and brain exercises for free.  Some of these exercises include:

“Guess who?” Games

“Guess who?” is a game that lets the elderly guess the name of a person whose picture is showed on Fari’ screen. Fari can also set questions and answers through the Fari application on your phone. This will help you boost memory and help the elder’s cognitive functions while providing enjoyment.

Brain Box

The person must observe a card with information relevant to their interests and then return it. Fari then asks you questions about the information on the card. With this game, you will work on your memory by learning things about a subject that pleases you and in a fun way. The brain box is not just reading cards and answering questions but rather an entertaining, beneficial game. You can just play with the cards through a simple touch on Fari’s screen, iMaking learning this new game easy and approachable.

Virtual Simon

Fari engages the senior with a classic game of Simon Says: lights come on and make a sound, and the patient must remember which key to press to redial the sequence. At each success, the sequence starts again this time with one more touch. The act of repeating the sequence each time makes memorization easier.

Smart

Smart is an ideal application for those who want to train their brain everyday. The elder will be able to discover thirty mini-games spread over more than 600 different levels. Each time, their logic, concentration and memorization skills will be exercised to try to reach the best possible score. Each level lasts about a minute which allows for quick sessions  at any time of the day.

Timeline

Here is another card game to train your memory. You will have to classify discoveries in the thread of the story, making this game a fun  puzzle trying to figure out when certain events happen in the timeline This game also includes many topics: events, sports and leisure, science and exploration. With this game, Fari helps the patient stay informed while training their cognitive muscles.

Round Geo Memo

This game provides virtual wood pieces, pleasant and carved-looking in the mass. It is undoubtedly a beautiful tool to rediscover the shapes through simple games: find the pairs, describe the shapes, make families, and find the intruder.

2-Minutes Ensemble

Fari offers this game so as to promote exchanges between you and your family members. The players share and recount their memories and anecdotes in turn. They resort to their memory, their imagination and even refocus on the joys of life. This is an ideal game that improves not only  the memory but also the social relations.

Our advanced technology makes it possible for our robotic assistant to be a true companion for everyone in their golden years. Having games that help the patient’s health but also engages them, Fari becomes much more than just a robot assistant sent to take care of you. Fari becomes a true robot that cares for you.

Leisure Time

It’s Leisure Time! In this article you will find some of the most worldwide entertaining books for the elderly.

When we made Fari, we wanted to make it a robot that assists older adults in every are. Because of this, we knew we had to give Fari aspects of her personality that cares for not only the physical health of the patient, but also their emotional well being. This includes keeping senior’s minds engaged and entertained. Here are some of the books we’ve chosen for Fari to recommend to elders depending on their tastes.

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks By Rebecca Skloot

On October 4, 1951, Henrietta Lacks died of cancer. During her treatment, the doctors at the hospital took a few cells from the body of the  31 year old  black woman for clinical tests without first consulting the family. The cells turned out to be unusual. They had unique qualities that made them valuable as research tools in medicine. They were then labeled as ‘HeLa’, and were reproduced and have been used in biological science since that time. They have been sold for high prices. As a result, Lacks’ family drew attention to the unethical and illegal use of their relative’s unique cells.

Driving Miss Norma: One Family’s Journey Saying “Yes” to Living by Tim Bauerschmidt, Ramie Liddle

Having been diagnosed with cancer at 90, she chose to skip surgery, chemo, and radiation and traveled across the US in an RV with her son, daughter-in-law and their dog. Norma was a treasure. It portrays a transformative journey mixed with wisdom and courage of living life on your own terms, which shows us that it is never too late to begin an adventure, or inspire hope.

The Things We Keep by Sally Hepworth

Anna Forster is only 38 years old and is in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease. As her disease takes more and more of her memory, Anna fights to hold on to what she knows, including her relationship with Luke. This is a great story about love, grief, and what we are willing to risk for others.

The Little Old Lady Who Broke All the Rules by Catharina Ingelman-Sundberg

Martha Andersson is 79 years old and dreams of escaping her care home and robbing a bank. She wants to escape her armchair existence and seek an exciting life. Martha decides to rebel against all of the rules imposed upon the residents of the care home.  This is a humorous and warm-hearted story about growing old comically disgracefully.

The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway

Santiago is a simple man. Fishing is his life. After 84 days without a big catch, many are starting to doubt his abilities as an angler. The elderly fisherman Santiago takes to the open sea in his desperation to catch a fish. This time he manages to catch a gigantic marlin, a fish never seen before by the people in the book. A big fight takes place in the next few days between the old man and the fish, as each of them fights for their survival.

The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson

Allan Karlsson, who is on his hundredth birthday, climbs out the window of his old people’s home and disappears. He then sets out on a journey where he steals a suitcase which turns out to contain a fortune that was paid for a drug deal. The police starts a nationwide hunt for Allan after a warrant issued for a triple murder. Hilarity ensues as this wonderfully imaginative plot unfolds in the pages of this lighthearted and wonderfully written book.

Fari Integrated Activity Detection System

For Fari to be a true companion for your golden years, we needed to make it able to truly know the space it shares with the patient, and know what the patient is doing in order to assist in any way possible. This, while it may sound fairly simple and common to us as humans, the cutting edge technology that it requires in robotics can be intimidating if you’re not prepared to research and invest in new technologies.

We at InGen Dynamics, however, are prepared to do exactly that. With Fari already having its Human Pose Detection System coupled with the technologies that fuel its Proactive Suggestions and its Object Detection Software, our robotic assistant has the necessary hardware and software to truly observe what is happening around it. This allows Fari to be able to improve the patient’s quality of life in a wide range of aspects, from caring for the security and physical well being of the patient, as well as making sure  that the elder feels happy and emotionally stable,

Fari has the ability to differentiate between a range of different poses and activities such as waking up, about to sit or stand, cooking dinner, watching TV, and even starting to walk or fall down. In this way, Fari’s Integrated Activity Detection System is equipped to support seniors in whatever activity it is they’re doing, and even advise the elder in a friendly and timely manner to prevent falls caused by lapses in memory or unseen obstacles.

This system, however, truly shines when Fari is connected to other devices in the house such as security cameras, smart home hubs, and even smartphones. This lets Fari perceive much more and help its patients do things like finding lost objects for them, offering to show helpful instructional videos when Fari senses the user struggling with a task, or even make sure the elder has all they need in order to go out and walk their dog.

This gigantic leap forward in technology is made possible because of cutting edge research in the field of robotics. Studies show that robotic assistants hooked to smart homes have very promising initial results, and can use complex algorithms in order to detect whether or not humans could use help with certain tasks and determining the best and most fluid way of providing help.

Altogether, Fari’s advanced technologies feed off of each other in order to provide the best experience possible. This allows Fari to become more and more helpful the more time it has spent living with its companion, allowing her Deep Learning A.I. modules to figure out the best way to be every elder’s perfect companion in their golden years, helping them achieve independence and feel powerful.

Fari: The friend you deserve

When we were designing Fari, making it a friendly and helpful was of paramount importance to us. We needed to integrate high-tech solutions with an approachable and easy to use a robot that can be a friend and a helper to all those who need Fari in their golden years.  This is why Fari is a host to a variety of features that make it the perfect companion and friend for the older population. Some of these features are:

  • Food preparation

Fari helps with all sorts of food preparation by using the kitchen app. I this app, Fari can use important nutritional information coupled with its knowledge of the patient acquired through medical professionals and tits own Deep Learning capabilities. This translates in Fari looking up healthy and tasty recipes with a nutritional content metered out just for the patient, all while accounting for the individual  tastes and preferences of the patients. This makes Fari equipped to make suggestions to elder’s diets, potentially improving their health by providing them with all the necessary nutrition to keep themselves healthy and aging gracefully.

  • Critical reminders

With Fari’s help, Elder’s will never forget anything again. Whether it’s something mundane but important like turning off the gas or making sure to turn off the lights when exiting a room, to things like reminding the patient when to take their medicine, as well as instructing patients and carers on how to best use medical equipment by showing the user instructional videos.

This feature allows Fari to integrate its object detection technologies with a personalized calendar in order to make sure seniors know their activities for the day while supporting them in reminding them of the little mundane things that have to be taken care of over the day. This allows seniors to always remember their shopping lists and never miss a show they like!

  • Voice commands

Fari can also take voice commands to answer simple questions. If the elder has problems with reading the small print and cannot read the weather forecast in the newspaper, a simple question to Fari about the forecast for tomorrow will solve that. With its wireless internet connectivity, Fari can answer questions from their companion, whether it’s the time, the weather, how traffic is looking for the day or any other simple question which the elder might have.

  • Activity and project development

Fari can also help seniors concentrate. Using its Critical reminder technology and its advanced perception, Fari knows the patient’s plans and can help elders stay focused and on task by making sure to remind them of any uncompleted projects they might want to finish later. This allows elders to create a priority for their tasks that can be enforced by Fari in case of any lapses in memory or other complications.

Altogether, Fari is designed to be a friendly companion for all of those in their golden years. Its features and technologies are approachable to all while still being advanced enough to provide every elder and their caretakers with significant benefits in their day to day lives.

A Summary of the Movie: Robot & Frank

From Movies to Reality!  From Fiction to Science! How has the idea of Robotics moved from being merely a scene on TV to a presence in reality? A hint on “Robot & Frank”

For his first feature film, Jake Schreier creates a really successful drama with a refreshing take on the story that is aging.. In the film, he treats Alzheimer’s with modesty and restraint. It integrates the disease as part of a plot where the suspense and the humor mix and the disease is not the central and omnipresent subject of the whole scenario.

Frank, the main character in the movie, is certainly a sick old man but he is also a former ‘burglar’ (i.e. a thief) who still dreams of returning to his old occupation. His son brings a robot to take care of him and his cognitive health. The film is very sober and the finesse of Frank’s character, as well as the subtlety of the story, allows us to plunge into the life of the old man who will find a life that gradually faded away.

Frank Langella is quite convincing and carries with great talent this intelligent old man whose escape from memory isolates him from the world and locks him in his wanderings. The anticipation side with the large presence of robots, whose design remains consistent with the current advances, gives the film a premonitory aspect that adds to the qualities already mentioned.

The Plot: Humor mixed with Drama

Frank will build a real relationship with his robot to develop a most unexpected robbery. The robot becomes his partner in crime. The robot easily helps Frank the robber and they run away with the jewels. Jake, persuaded that Frank is responsible, talks to Sheriff Rowlings. Frank’s house is under surveillance. Frank panics and hides the evidence. The police enter his home. When one of the policemen suggests analyzing the robot’s memory, he runs away with the robot.

Escaping from the law at Jennifer’s, he discovers a picture of her with him: he then realizes that Jennifer is his ex-wife. The robot insists that Frank should erase his memory; this memory is the last proof of Frank’s guilt. Refusing at first for a few times, Frank ended up doing it.

What does this film teach us?

In appearance, “Robot & Frank” seems to have nothing to do with technology and the world around us. Yet in reality, the film develops a real reflection on the relationship between individuals and futuristic advances. For the most part, everything is normal, new technologies are advances that we integrate into our society most naturally in the world.

Robots are now part of our everyday life; the screens will replace the paper. In the movie, Frank’s daughter comes from the future and adopts a refusal perspective to robots, for purely humanistic reasons. We will discover later that without technology, it is difficult to evolve in the old fashion anyway. The hero, too, is reluctant to accept the world of today. This is because Frank is a man at the end of life, suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, and who is therefore deeply attached to a world that has evolved far too fast for him.

For us at InGen Dynamics, “Robot & Frank” can inform us of some of the more dangerous applications of modern robotics, while at the same time it gives us a clear indication that elders are looking for assistants who will empower them in their passions and care for them no matter what, even if the elder’s passion is a jewel heist.

Critical Reminders

Whether we would like to admit it or not, all of us have a bucket list. For some of us, it’s actually written down and has specific achievements and experiences listed out after long considerations. For others, it can be something as simple as just wishing to travel more and wanting to have children someday. Big or small, complicated or not, we all wish to have enough time in our life to experience things we’ve been looking forward to.

For many, retirement means having the time and freedom to be able to cross off the things you always wanted to live through or accomplish. After all, retirement, means that you no longer have to depend on working in order to support yourself, so in theory, you are free to do whatever you desire. However, the reality is very different, and because of factors that can be completely outside of your control, aging can bring many of those plans to a screeching halt.

With the variety of health complications that come with aging, it can be hard to maintain your independence, let alone accomplish your wildest dreams from your youth. From financial troubles stemming from unforeseen shifts in the economic landscape to lack of mobility restricting the possibility of performing certain rewarding activities, our golden years can be threatened by the threat that growing ever older imposes.

This is why when we designed Fari, we wanted to give seniors the tools to pursue their passions and interests within their realm of capabilities. Thanks to Fari’s critical reminders technology, which feeds from its object recognition interacting with its highly advanced  Deep Learning features, Fari can understand your wants and ambition and make sure that you have the tools to get there. From helping aging seniors with things like turning off the gas, turning off the lights, having their meals on time, and remembering the basic everyday things that can occasionally slip through the cracks of age, Seniors can focus their energy and strength on pursuing the activities they actually enjoy.

By helping seniors access technologies previously too foreign and unapproachable, Fari helps you do the things you always wanted to do. With Fari’s help, doing things like ordering shipments online and not knowing when they will arrive or looking for events and opportunities on search engines and social media are no longer outside the reach of any senior. Even if Fari’s companion has trouble remembering their engagements, Fari will help them make sure they are using their time effectively.

This feature is especially helpful for those with issues such as Alzheimer’s and victims of diseases that affect your memory. The critical reminder technology integrated within Fari guarantees that any senior can keep their mind focused and keep accomplishing their desires by letting patients know whenever they’ve forgotten something important. With technological advancements such as this, Fari can make it easier for seniors everywhere to keep accomplishing their goals and make the most out of their golden years.

Ethical Issues related to Robotics. What are the main ethical issues that may be encountered when attempting to adopt a robot? To what extent can Fari minimize these issues?

Private life and personal data may be become public

If the goal is to give more autonomy to the older person, do Robots end up controlling it against his will? For example, cameras can detect and manage the abnormal behavior of the person to watch his surroundings, but this undeniably affects their privacy. Therefore, privacy is then made public, especially when the robot shares it online without the consent of the individual. It follows then that the information that robots collect must be protected because they may reveal what is private and because their disclosure may undermine the rights and freedoms of the persons concerned.

Human dignity is invaded

Human dignity is not explicitly described and cannot be learned in a syntactic machine. When robots take care of tasks such as feeding and lifting, people seeking care may feel treated as objects. This ethical complaint, which is shared by many people, about “objectification” is related to the idea that robots cannot provide good care. Besides, most robots are programmed to learn, adapt, assess a situation and take a decision. Still, the decision they make is mostly not moral, but rather statistical.

Subjectivity instead of Objectivity

Robots do what human beings ask them to do. If a robot is fueled by human prejudices (be they conscious or unconscious), it will give biased results. The lack of diversity and inclusion that characterizes the design of AI systems is a major concern: instead of making our decisions more objective, these systems may reinforce discrimination and prejudice by giving them an appearance of objectivity. Robots can also have potentially unpredictable reactions. This means that there is a problem of trust.

Moreover, robots miss the sentimental element, the suffering, the pleasure and the imperfections, which are at the same time a disadvantage (the human can commit more faults than the robot and he can have less sensory capacities), but also a tremendous difference in terms of empathy, solidarity of the living and adaptability to the unforeseen of the environment and evolution. Such sentimental elements are largely a part in making decisions.

Advantages of adopting Fari

Having mentioned the main issues that may be encountered in adopting other robots, we (as creators of Fari) have taken them into consideration in an attempt to find solutions. As a result, Fari has the following traits:

  • In adopting Fari, you can protect yourself against the possible risks by activating the encryption of private communications.
  • Fari is programmed to listen and to act according to what is being said to her. She is also programmed to make suggestions, and not to dictate orders.
  • She has integrated facial emotion recognition software that allows her to detect the emotional status of her accompanied individual. This allows Fari to know when she is being helpful, and when she is causing her companions to be upset.
  • She has also security software that protects individuals against illegal surveillance.
  • You can shut her down at anytime you need, without affecting her performance.

Finally, Fari is a robotic assistant programmed to be helpful and friendly. This being the case, we wanted to make Fari be subject the patients and healthcare providers’ complete control. This results in a robotic companion that you can always control, instead of it trying to control you.

A Robot to help people regain their autonomy. How do older people perceive the idea of adopting a Robot?

Robots,  companions who want the well-being of the elderly

Robotics, the science of automatic machines and technologies, can provide solutions by helping dependent people. For example, by carrying things around the house, by keeping an eye out for the person, and by calling for help if needed.

The systematic review reveals that older people support the idea behind Robotics; robots have many roles such as performing physically difficult tasks, reminding them to take their medications or going to an appointment, distracting them and keeping them company, etc. Robots are also seen as safety devices to warn relatives or health professionals in the case of a fall or deterioration of health status.

Perceptions on the relation between robots and the elderly

Our research has taught us that perceptions about the interactions between robots and the elderly depend mainly on how to communicate with the robot. If the robot recognizes the human voice or interacts through a touch screen, perceptions seem positive, and it’s even better if the robot can respond spontaneously using a “human” voice.

This is why Maria, 81 years old, would more than welcome a robotic companion. Today, she doesn’t live alone in her home anymore. She deeply cherishes our robot designed to improve the quality of life of elderly people who are alone at home.

According to her, the model that is being tested at home can be useful. This autonomous device can move in the living places, but also detect, recognize and locate humans and objects. “Today, I feel pretty good, I have all my faculties, but I will becomeolder and maybe senile!” She says with a smile. She adds, “for example, if I lose my glasses, it would be nice to be able to ask the robot to look for them: it would be really useful.”

“The Robot could remind me when I have to take my medicine”

Many experiments on Robotics take place in centers for the elderly. These robots could create a link between the residents, their relatives and the staff. A caregiver of an association gives her point of view: “I believe that in the future, these robots could be interesting tools: they could, for example, offer interactive games that would stimulate cognitive and communicative abilities of older people,” she said before adding: “The robots would encourage them to talk, to converse, and it would meet a great need as these people live alone and talk less and less.”

Liam participates in activities in a day center for the elderly. He also sees the benefits in “adopting” a robot: “I am alone at home, so he could help me in different ways, he could for example help me remember when I have to take my medicine: it is important for me,” he insists.

A robot at home for a better quality of life

Company robots can be of great service for performing repetitive tasks and monitoring. Arnaud (an old man) says: “I think many robots have friendly appearances and are also safe for people. In addition, they do not replace humans, but help to improve our quality of life.” Because of people like Arnaud, Liam, and Maria, we can be sure that both elders and healthcare providers see Fari as the ideal robotic companion for your golden years.
